Contribution:
The creative process

Designer, script-writer, interaction designer, ergonomist… a whole array of names for a profession which seems to be having difficulty in finding its place in the structure of « multimedia » creation and production, and hence also in the labour market.
This is rather surprising, considering the large number of “multimedia training courses” on this subject, a subject for which market forces deny the utility. In a situation where the division of work is being belittled, the more versatile the person, the more valuable they are. The person who can do everything - who knows how to use all the tools from Photoshop to Director, will therefore be invaluable- the absolute myth of the omnipotent creator.
This gap between training possibilities and professional prospects, between expectations and the reality of the workable content, leads to situations of professional identity crisis.
The relationship with software tools and the fact that they evolve so very rapidly is another source of tension: although new possibilities are forever pushing the limits of the imagination, the need for permanent retraining locks the creator into a situation where his knowledge is being challenged and questioned at all times.
We are therefore faced with the issue of the role of the designer in the creation process, a process which itself fluctuates, and which can sometimes even become more interesting than the finished product itself.
