Drame - France

Sound director, music composer (Un Drame Musical Instantané), film creator (Le sniper) and multimedia author (Carton, Machiavel, Alphabet), Jean-Jacques Birgé is keenly interested in sounds and images, in particular for their potential to convey meaning and spur emotions. His present work focuses on generative and interactive writing that lets players discover a new interpretation every time.

Contribution:
Music at play

Very few music composers seem enthusiastic about creating music for interactive media, mainly because they are reticent to loose control (the members of the profession would all appear to suffer from paranoia to one extent or another!). The whole point here in this new work is indeed to offer the player the musician’s role. It means that both the structures themselves and the technical means that bring them precisely into play need to be designed in a totally different way. Beyond the constraints that are inherent to any form of expression, and which are an incentive to invent new ones, interactive music forces the composer to use a literary form of expression for something he is more used to creating in an intuitive manner - in a way, translating his dreams into algorithms. Personally, I have always dreamed of creating a work with an endless future, and I want to pass on to the user the same excitement as I experience when I’m composing or improvising on my instruments, in other words, to give him the taste for play, since we say that we “play” music.
